Throughout perimenopause and after menopause, women frequently complain of poor short-term memory and a loss of concentration. You may find that you are forgetting things more frequently or losing focus on the tasks you have at hand. The challenging nature of perimenopause itself, including stress over unusually heavy bleeding, frequent and intolerable hot flashes, sleeplessness, mood swings or worry over incontinence, can all contribute to muddled thinking. Moreover, worry about memory and concentration problems can exacerbate the situation even further.

Age-Related Memory Problems, or Alzheimers?

Some age-related decline in memory function is normal and does not mean that a medical problem like Alzheimer’s disease is looming. Furthermore, if you are experiencing concentration and memory problems, this may not necessarily be a symptom of menopause. It may simply be age related. Either way, you are not alone. Most of us experience some degree of memory loss as we age. While menopause may make the situation worse, experts believe that much of this can be attributed to the stresses of this life transition.

Managing Concentration and Memory Loss

It is best to take a proactive approach in managing this symptom of menopause. There are a number of steps you can take to keep your mind fit. Just as physical exercise keeps your body healthy, mental activity keeps your mind sharp and agile. If you take on new and exciting mental problems, your brain will continue steadily to grow. Research has shown that our brains never lose the capacity to learn and that learning new things literally causes our brains to grow. No matter your age, a dynamic mind produces new dendrites. These are the connections between nerve cells that allow the cells to communicate with one another. This helps the brain store and retrieve data from your memory more easily. It sounds like a cliché but playing a variety of mental games such as scrabble, bridge, chess, crossword puzzles or Sudoku puzzles will indeed sharpen your mind.

Learn a brand new musical instrument, sport, or language. Take computer classes or learn to use new software programs. Read more books and remain informed of the latest news. Keep an energetic social life with family and friends or expand your social network by volunteering in a non-profit organization. Your overall goal should be to always challenge your mind in new ways.

Fact: Recent research has found a strong link between a healthy body and a healthy mind. Physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, eating a well-balanced diet, avoiding smoking and managing cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels can also help keep cognitive function strong and defend against concentration and memory loss.

Coping with Concentration and Memory Problems

There are a number of basic strategies that you can use to make your life a little easier if you are experiencing memory problems or difficulty concentrating. Implement the following strategies to take control of your daily life;

Write things down in a calendar and refer to it throughout your day

Keep a journal

Make lists of things you need to do

Use a shopping list when running errands

Establish daily routines

Create one place where you will always keep all easy to lose items such as keys, glasses, wallets, phone etc.

When cooking or baking use a timer that clips onto your clothes

Eat well-balanced and nutritious meals

Participate in regular physical exercise

Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Help?

Concentration and memory problems can be brought on by age or the stresses of perimenopause and menopause and may not be caused by changing hormone levels. Whether or not hormone therapy helps with memory and concentration problems
is controversial and may possibly rely on when treatment is started. For more information on this topic, see our article on hormone replacement.

She was experiencing hot flashes sometimes up to 20 times per day, and would awaken several times throughout the night sweating profusely. When she would wake up at night, Kary would often have to change entirely out of her pajamas into a new set of clothing because she would be completely soaked in sweat.

1. What does genistein do?

Genistein is a phytoestrogen, which means it has a mild estrogen effect on the body, and this can help with menopause relief. Since estrogen is lacking when a women enters menopause, genistein provides an all-natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy and helps to reduce menopause symptoms. It binds with estrogen receptors on cells, and this causes a decrease in the amount of hot flashes, fatigue, and other menopause symptoms you may have. Of all the natural phytoestrogens, genistein is the strongest and the most beneficial component of soy for the relief of menopause symptoms. It has also shown promise in preventing osteoporosis, reducing the risk of breast cancer, and lowering cholesterol.

2. What is black cohosh?

Black cohosh is a plant that has estrogen effects on the body and helps to relieve menopause symptoms. It is ideal for helping with the headaches, hot flashes, and mood problems that menopause and perimenopause can sometimes cause. Black cohosh can also reduce menopause symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, and heart palpitations. Many studies have shown that black cohosh can be a viable alternative to traditional hormone replacement therapy. Other conditions black cohosh is used for include premenstrual syndrome, labor induction, arthritis, high blood pressure, and prostate cancer.

3. What does black cohosh do?

Black cohosh helps relieve menopause symptoms because it has estrogen-like effects. It effectively helps to relieve hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and headaches so commonly related to menopause, but research studies have shown that it does not actually act on the estrogen receptors in the body. Researchers do not currently know how or why black cohosh reduces menopause symptoms, but the studies show that it does. More study into the actual mechanism of how black cohosh works in the body needs to be done to better understand how the herb achieves its results.

4. Is black cohosh safe?

Yes, black cohosh is safe. However, you should check with your doctor before taking any supplements to ensure that it is safe for your medical background and is compatible with the medications you are taking. For instance, black cohosh contains salicylic acid, and it could cause an allergic reaction in people who have an allergy to aspirin. Black cohosh also may interfere with hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills, so you need to make sure you discuss this supplement with your doctor if you are taking any medications. If you have liver disease, a history of a hormone sensitive cancer, or any other chronic condition, black cohosh may be contraindicated. If you have any medical condition, check with your doctor before taking dietary supplements.

5. Are there any side effects of black cohosh?

At the amounts used in menopause supplements, few women experience any side effects. However, some minor side effects from black cohosh have been noted as this herb has been widely researched in clinical studies. Some individuals may notice indigestion, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, a heavy feeling in the legs and a drop in blood pressure. Some cultures also have used black cohosh to induce pregnancy. Since not much is known about how it affects pregnant and breast-feeding women, you should avoid it if you are in those categories. Likewise, since black cohosh has an estrogen effect, do not take it or any supplement containing black cohosh if you have had a hormone sensitive cancer, such as breast, ovarian, uterine, or endometrial cancers. If you have liver disease, use black cohosh and any dietary supplements with caution and at only at the recommendation of your physician.

6. How much black cohosh should I take?

Most studies for the relief of menopause symptoms have found 20 to 40 milligrams of black cohosh once or twice per day to be an effective dose. It is important to get black cohosh that is standardized and has been thoroughly tested to ensure that it does not contain contaminants. Most experts recommend 40 milligrams of black cohosh per day. At extremely high levels such as 900 milligrams of black cohosh per day, seizures and visual disturbances may occur. Most experts do not recommend taking this supplement for longer than six months at a time to reduce menopause symptoms. If you take black cohosh longer than this, only do so under the supervision of your doctor.

7. What is inositol?

Inositol is a vitamin-like substance found in many plants and animals. It is often used to treat the symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Since anxiety and depression are such a common menopause symptom, it makes sense to take this powerful natural substance to combat this recurrent problem among menopausal women. Studies have shown that inositol is effective against panic attacks and obsessive compulsive disorder. Some research also indicates that inositol may be effective in relieving depression as well.

8. Is inositol safe?

Inositol is generally safe for most healthy adults to consume, although you should always check with your doctor before starting any supplement, vitamin, or medication. Some common side effects from inositol taken at high doses may include nausea, fatigue, headache, and dizziness. If you are having menopause symptoms and suffer from bipolar disorder, there is some evidence that inositol can make this condition worse. You should consult with your doctor before taking this supplement in that case. Inositol has not been tested on pregnant and breast-feeding women, so do not take this supplement if pregnant or breast-feeding.

9. What is boron?

Boron is a mineral that is common in food, the environment, and in your body. It actually has an estrogen-like effect on the body, and it can help reduce menopause symptoms by stimulating estrogen receptors on body cells. Boron helps to reduce hot flashes, anxiety, fatigue, and osteoporosis due to perimenopause because it has qualities that mimic estrogen. Boron is used to strengthen bones in older women and men, and it helps with mental clarity and focus. A type of boron, boric acid, is used as a vaginal suppository to kill off vaginal yeast infections.

10. Is boron safe?

Boron is safe as long as one does not consume in excess of 20 milligrams per day. High intake of boron could result in poisoning. Those who have had hormone related cancers, such as breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers, should not take boron because of the strong estrogen effect that this mineral has on the body. Boron is safe for pregnant women when taken in doses less than 20 milligrams per day. Avoid boron if you have kidney disease.

11. How much boron is recommended?

Boron occurs naturally in the food you eat, so you have to account for what your intake from your diet. A typical 2000 calorie diet gets 3.25 milligrams of boron per day. There is no recommended daily intake for boron, but there is a tolerable upper limit for it. Experts believe you should not consume, in food or in supplements, more than 20 milligrams of boron per day.

The best products for menopause symptoms are ones you will actually use! Find products you are comfortable with using and that are convenient when you need menopause symptom relief. Cooling towels can provide hot flash relief on the spot, and special creams can be found that provide long-lasting cooling effects on the skin overnight. A fashionable hand fan can be used to keep menopause hot flashes at bay during the day, and a blowing fan at night can help prevent a menopause night sweat from being disrupting.

2. During menopause, how many hot flashes is it normal to have per day?

There is no set number of hot flashes per day that is considered “normal”. The number and intensity of hot flashes experienced by women is extremely variable. Some women have infrequent and mild hot flashes, while others can experience dozens of hot flashes a day that leave them dripping wet. If you are in the latter category, you may consider talking to your doctor about natural or medical treatments/therapies.

3. Does giving up alcohol reduce hot flashes during menopause?

Studies have shown that alcohol can increase the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. In addition, alcohol use has been linked to heart disease and osteoporosis. Menopause also increases your risk of developing these conditions, so it is probably best to at least decrease your consumption of alcohol.

4. Does giving up coffee reduce hot flashes during menopause?

Yes, many women find that reducing their caffeine intake lessens the frequency and intensity of their hot flashes. Hot beverages in general may bring on a hot flash. If you find this is the case, stick to cool (non-alcoholic) beverages, such as water or juice.

5. Will giving up spicy foods help reduce my hot flashes during menopause?

Some women find that spicy foods trigger hot flashes. Chili, Mexican food and Indian food are common culprits. You might try asking for a milder version of your favorite dish. Allowing your food to cool down a little before eating may also help decrease hot flashes.

6. Are there any vitamins or minerals to help with hot flashes?

Some studies have shown vitamins B and E to be effective in reducing hot flashes. Boron, a mineral found in food, is thought to increase estrogen in older women, which may help reduce hot flashes.

7. What causes hot flashes?

It is believed that hot flashes are caused by declining estrogen levels which, in turn, affect thermoregulation (how the body controls its temperature). Experts are still not sure how the two are related. In addition, hot flashes can be triggered by certain foods, alcohol and other factors.

8. What foods or drinks can cause hot flashes during menopause?

Spicy foods are known to induce hot flashes in some women (i.e. Mexican foods, Indian and spicy Asian foods). Foods and beverages served piping hot may also cause hot flashes. Decreasing alcohol intake may help reduce the incidence and severity of hot flashes.

Anxious or feeling down? Lethargic and lacking libido? Don’t worry, menopause is absolutely normal and these menopause symptoms are quite common. You might also be experiencing mood swings, anxiety and hot flashes. Although menopause can be challenging, there are ways to minimize your menopause symptoms. Increasing your physical activity is a powerful way to deal with these new challenges. Exercise during menopause has been shown to help deal with numerous symptom and just having an activity to focus on can help make your symptoms diminish.

The Best Exercise During Menopause: Swimming

When hot flashes happen to be the one menopause symptom that cases you extreme discomfort, exercising is probably the last thing on your mind. You’re already sweating through your clothes, so why would you choose to take up running or lifting weights? But what if you could work out and stay cool at the same time? If you suffer from hot flashes, the best exercise during menopause is swimming. There are numerous benefits to swimming and staying cool is just one of them.

Many people don’t think about swimming as exercise, but that’s because it can be so much fun. Sure there are pool games to play with your friends or kids, but you can also do laps and work on your crawl, breaststroke or butterfly. One of the things that makes swimming the best exercise is that it is a full body workout that does not stress your joints. Swimming is a great cardio activity that is very good for your overall health and well being and can provide a complete workout. The endorphins released during and after a good swim can help keep mood swings to a minimum and your energy level up.

In addition to being a great cardio exercise, swimming strengthens your whole body. Pushing through the water may seem very easy compared to lifting weights, but your body is definitely working hard. Swimming can firm up your arms, legs and buttocks and you don’t even have to pick up a barbell. Hot flashes are the last thing on your mind when you’re doing a few laps in a cool, comfortable pool.

Plus, the more you swim, the greater the number of laps you’ll be able to do. There’s a great sense of accomplishment as you begin to notice your improvement. As the number of laps you do increases, your mood gets better too. So those mood swings and anxiety can decrease both from the exertion itself and the great feeling you’ll have from getting better and better every time.

Any Exercise is Helpful During Menopause

Although swimming is the best exercise for those with hot flashes, any exercise can be a good coping strategy for a number of common symptoms. All forms of exercise can help boos mood energy levels and libido. It is helpful to find activities like swimming, jogging, tennis or walking that help you take your life back from menopause. So get active and head for the nearest beach, lake or pool to stay cool while you exercise! You’ll calm those hot flashes by exercising in cool water and may find that swimming reduces your mood swings and anxiety by providing strong physical exertion. Just because it’s in the water and it’s fun doesn’t mean it’s not doing you any good. If swimming sounds like it might fit into your lifestyle and help you cool down, then dive right in!

Eight Basic Truths Every Woman Needs to Know About Menopause

Whether you’re currently experiencing menopause or warily approaching that time in your life, a lack of knowledge can increase your stress level. It’s always the unknown that scares us the most. But understanding the eight basic menopause facts can bring clarity and some emotional relief. So if you think you are experiencing menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and anxiety, a better understanding of this unique time in your life will help you cope.

Knowledge is Power: 8 Basic Menopause Facts

Menopause is a Milestone

The day that marks twelve consecutive months since your last period is the beginning of menopause. Much like other milestones in your life, this may give you pause for reflection. Remember, a positive attitude can help. Make positive changes in your life to bring about more happiness.

Menopause is a natural part of aging. It’s a fact of life. Pretending it isn’t happening or focusing only on the difficulties isn’t going to make menopause go away. But accepting it and approaching it with a healthy perspective will help you cope. Knowing that menopause symptoms are simply a natural part of life for most women should help put you at ease.

Menopause Symptoms are Common

Approximately 70% of women say they experience menopause symptoms. So if you experience a variety of symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats you are not alone. Moreover, you’ve got a lot of support. Talk to your friends and go online to women’s chat rooms and you’ll find out just how true this is. You’ll see how helpful connecting with others can be.

You Can Find Relief

There are both medical and non-medical options available to help relieve mood swings, anxiety, hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Exercise and a good attitude can help you combat some symptoms. Dietary and lifestyle changes can also be very helpful. If you’re interested in medical options, talk with your doctor. Every woman is different. Explore what might work for you. Try a variety of options to see what helps you the most and fits your lifestyle.

Perimenopause is a Possibility

Some menopause symptoms might occur before menstruation has stopped. This transition is called perimenopause and could last anywhere from a few months to many years. Hot flashes, mood swings and a decreased sex drive are common. These are all symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Menopause Occurs Early for Some Women

If your menstrual period stops before the age of 40, this is considered premature menopause. There are not necessarily any medical concerns you need to have if this happens. It just means you might be feeling those night sweats and hot flashes before some of your friends. They’ll appreciate your knowledge a few years later.

Your Doctor Can Help

If you’re not sure if those hot flashes and night sweats are due to spicy food or menopause, your doctor can help you figure it out. With just a few simple tests, she can determine if you’re in menopause and if so, which stage. This knowledge can change your perspective. It can give you power to reduce your menopause symptoms. Remember, you are not alone.

Aside from your friends, there are numerous support groups you can utilize. Information resources are available either on the Internet or through your doctor. Commiserating with others who are experiencing the same thing can result in a better perspective. They can help you be more positive. Plus, you might get some ideas for how to cope with this natural, but often challenging, life change.
Knowledge is power. Hopefully the menopause facts and information covered in this article will give you a better perspective about menopause and its symptoms. But this is just a starting point. The more you continue to educate yourself about menopause the better prepared you will be if those hot flashes and night sweats begin. Most importantly, remember that menopause is just a normal part of life. There are plenty of women like you to talk to about what you’re going through. You’re not alone!

Foods You Should Eat During Menopause

Menopause is one of the most natural life changes a woman will experience. It comes with its own challenges like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and anxiety, but it can also liberate you from the difficulties of your period. Suggestions about how to relieve menopause symptoms abound, but something to consider during this time are your eating habits. These foods won’t necessarily relieve your menopause symptoms, but eating the right, healthy foods can make you feel better. Eating well can give you more energy and improve your mood. Plus the right foods will give your body calcium and magnesium at a time when it needs these minerals most. So take a look at our list of food you should eat during menopause and start stocking your kitchen.

Milk and Dairy Products

Calcium is very important for bone strength, which does deteriorate during menopause. Nonfat milk and low fat cheeses will help you get plenty of calcium naturally without all the fat. Plus, when you’re craving comfort food during those menopausal mood swings, these are some healthy alternatives.

Soy Products

Some studies suggest that soy products like edamame and tofu may relieve menopause symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. But the verdict is still out. However, if you tend to eat a lot of red meat, which is high in cholesterol and fat, soy products are a much healthier protein alternative. And there’s a lot you can do with tofu in the kitchen. Buy a vegetarian cookbook and you’ll be surprised at what you can create.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Vitamins and nutrients become even more important during menopause; fresh fruits and vegetables pack a healthy punch of them both. Try to have vegetables with every meal and you know you’ll be treating your body right. If you have a sweet tooth, fruits are a much healthier alternative to any kind of processed sugar. Plus unhealthy, sugary desserts can put an even worse spin on those mood swings and anxiety. So choose some grapes or cherries over the ice cream.

Get Nutty!

Snack time can be the downfall of any person, whether they’re experiencing menopause or not. But when you’re dealing with hot flashes and night sweats as well, it’s hard to not snack for comfort. So if you’re going to snack, nuts like almonds and cashews will give you the crunch you’re craving. Packed with protein, make sure you choose unsalted nuts to keep your sodium level low and your water retention minimal.

Whole Grains

During menopause, when so many things are changing in your body, it’s important (and comforting) to be able to maintain other bodily functions. High fiber foods are important nutrients that help keep you regular. Mood swings and anxiety can affect digestion, so treat yourself to some comfort foods like whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta and rice.

Go Fishing

In addition to being an excellent source of lean protein, fish provides healthy oils that your body and mind need to work at their optimal level. This protein will also help you control your weight because it’s very low in cholesterol and fat. You can also prepare it in hundreds of different ways. But if you want to try to avoid hot flashes and night sweats, you might want to stay away from any strong spices.

Simple Soup

Straight from a can or fun to make on your own, soup is a fantastic way to easily work more healthy vegetables and legumes into your diet. You’ll get the nutrients that make your body feel good and the non-fat protein that gives you energy. The perfect comfort food, soup can regulate those mood swings and anxiety. If you’re buying cans at the supermarket, just be sure to check the sodium content and stick with the low sodium varieties.

Plenty of Water

Hydration is important too. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is particularly important if you experience menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Some women may find that alcohol and caffeine exacerbate these menopause symptoms. So water is always a safe bet. Throw a slice of fruit in your glass to add flavor!
Again, so far there is no clinical data that shows these foods give you relief from menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and anxiety. But eating healthy will simply make you feel better overall, giving you more energy and helping you maintain a positive outlook. So remember to always take care of your body so it can take care of you.
